1. About this policy
This policy explains how BowelAware uses cookies and similar browser storage technologies (local storage, session storage and cache storage) when you use our website and Progressive Web App. It should be read alongside our Privacy Policy.
We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site tracking pixels, or third-party marketing analytics. We never place your bowel-health diary information in a cookie.
2. Essential cookies and storage
These are required for the app to work. They cannot be switched off from within BowelAware, but you can block or clear them in your browser (which will sign you out and reset your preferences).
Authentication session
Local storage (essential)
Keeps you signed in securely and lets your diary load. Without it you would be signed out on every page.
Kept for: Until you sign out or the session expires
Security and abuse prevention
Cookie (essential)
Used by our hosting and backend providers to protect the service from fraudulent or automated requests.
Kept for: Session to 12 months
App preferences
Local storage (essential)
Remembers small choices such as reminder and appointment notification settings, whether you have installed the app to your home screen, and notices you have dismissed.
Kept for: Until you clear your browser storage
Offline page cache
Cache storage (essential)
Stores pages you have already visited so key parts of the app keep working without an internet connection.
Kept for: Until you clear site data or uninstall the app
3. Analytics and measurement
We keep measurement deliberately minimal and privacy-preserving. We do not use Google Analytics or comparable third-party analytics cookies.
Anonymous referral counts
Server-side event (no cookie)
Counts how many times partner links, such as Rotary Bowelscan, are clicked. These counts are anonymous and never include health data or anything that identifies you.
Kept for: Aggregated indefinitely
Anonymous share counts
Server-side event (no cookie)
Counts how often the app is shared and through which channel (link, email, text message or social media), plus the page it was shared from. No health data, message content or identifying details are recorded. You can switch this off at any time using the share tracking control on the Share card, or under Privacy & my data when signed in.
Kept for: Aggregated indefinitely
Basic access logs
Server log (no cookie)
Standard hosting logs (IP address, browser type, time of request) used to keep the service running securely.
Kept for: Short-term operational retention
4. Managing your cookie preferences
- In your browser: most browsers let you block or delete cookies and site data under Settings → Privacy. Blocking essential storage will prevent you from signing in.
- Clear BowelAware data: use your browser's "Clear site data" option for bowelaware.app to remove cookies, local storage and the offline page cache.
- Turn off offline caching: uninstall the home-screen app, or clear site data, to remove the cached pages.
- Notifications: diary check-in, GP prompt and appointment reminders are opt-in and can be turned off any time in your reminder settings or in your browser's site permissions.
- Do Not Track: we do not track you across other websites, so there is nothing for a Do Not Track signal to disable.
5. Third parties
Our authentication, database and storage provider sets essential cookies and storage to keep your session secure. Partner organisations we link to (for example Rotary Bowelscan, Cancer Council and government screening services) set their own cookies once you leave BowelAware — their policies apply on their websites.
6. Changes and contact
We will update this page whenever our use of cookies changes. If you have questions about cookies or your privacy, contact us at privacy@bowelaware.app. You can also request deletion of your account and diary data.
